Tiivistelmä
With a great increase in the number of electric vehicles (EVs) on the road and a substantial growth of automotive human-machine interface (HMI) technologies such as touchscreen-based infotainment systems, the user experience (UX) and user expectations of the HMI tech-nologies in EVs are worth studying. When devising a dashboard for EVs that tend to offer more assistance and convenient services, reducing the driver’s visual transition between the inside and outside of the car is always considered in the safety-critical driving situation. How-ever, large touchscreens on the car dashboard have received criticism about the safety risks they could bring. In these aspects, as a globally leading EV pioneer, Tesla, together with its Model 3 that has fully replaced the conventional instrument cluster with a large touchscreen, are representative. For a Model 3 that has a one-and-only touchscreen mounted at the center of its dashboard while has no instrument cluster behind its steering wheel, what are the cur-rent strengths and weaknesses of its touchscreen from a UX perspective and what can be expected in the future? This paper used a Tesla Model 3 as the case study object to gain in-sights into the touchscreen UX of Model 3 from both the first-time user group and experienced user group and to envision the application of another HMI technology – AR-HUD, which is a head-up display (HUD) integrated with augmented reality (AR) technology, to the dashboard of Model 3, aiming to propose ideas of the design guidelines of AR-HUDs being the touchscreen auxiliary for Model 3 or any future EV with a minimalist dashboard through the implications drawn from the case study as well as relevant academic research.
