Tiivistelmä
Organization theory offers insight into the effectiveness of an organization and how the structure of a company can affect efficiency. Operations management theory presents tools that can be used to describe the products of a company. Both theories offer insight into how the contingency factors of a company and its products affect the organizational structure. This multiple-method thesis investigates how a modern scale-up company can use these theories to analyze its organizational structure and develop it, either in steps or incrementally. A literature review recognized the challenges to modern organizations and offered some insight into how these challenges may be mitigated. Organizations in the 2020s face uncertainties and hypercompetition that stress the need for organizational decisions that are based on strategy and affect innovation and adaptation. A thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews of the case company’s management was used to investigate the internal challenges of the case company, i.e., undergoing a scale-up. Factor analysis and thematic analysis were used to analyze the data collected through a questionnaire to the company’s employees.
The main findings were that the scale-up and a diverse product portfolio have resulted in challenges to the case company. This is also in line with what organization theory presents. The case company can thus use theory to relieve the challenges that it faces, even though the business environment has changed over the years. The effects of organizational structure to companies in the 2020s are presented, and the theory of symptoms of structural deficiencies was used to portray the organizational challenges that the company faces. The results from the questionnaire showed differences in how different departments in the case company understand the need for collaboration, which is congruent to theory.
The results contribute to organizational research on modern companies and present an example of how these can be assessed using symptoms of structural deficiency. The study gives practical insights into the case company's organizational challenges and how they can be resolved. The study combines organizational theory and operations management theory to describe a company and reveal different views on addressing organizational challenges.
