Pääsuunnittelijan rooli ja vaikutus kestävässä rakennushankkeessa

Abstract

Tässä diplomityössä syvennytään pääsuunnittelijan rooliin suomalaisen uudisrakennushankkeen kestävyyden kannalta. Kirjallisuuskatsauksen, asiantuntijahaastatteluiden ja fokusryhmätyöskentelyn avulla pyritään tunnistamaan roolin merkitys rakennushankkeen kestävyydelle. Työssä pyritään selvittämään, miten pääsuunnittelija voi roolissaan vaikuttaa kestävyyteen, kuinka merkittävää vaikuttaminen on ja voisiko sitä jotenkin lisätä. Rakentamisella on suuri vaikutus ilmastonmuutoksen kiihtymiseen. Toisaalta se on myös oleellinen osa ongelman ratkaisua. Kestävä rakennus on hyväksi niin ilmastolle ja ympäristölle, kuin rakennetun ympäristön laadulle yleensä. Kehitettäessä rakentamisen kulttuuria kestävämpään suuntaan arkkitehdilla on myös roolinsa osana muutosta. Pääsuunnittelijan tehtävää hoitaa useimmiten arkkitehti ja pääsuunnittelijan rooli on yksi mahdollinen arkkitehdin työnkuvan ulottuvuus. Yksi tämän tutkimuksen taustalla oleva tavoite onkin selvittää, miten tätä puolta arkkitehdin ammatista voitaisiin käyttää tai miten sitä voitaisiin tehostaa paremman ja kestävämmän rakentamisen edistämiseksi. Kirjallisuuskatsauksessa tutkitaan aihetta olemassa olevan tutkimuksen ja kirjallisuuden kautta. Katsauksessa selvitetään, mikä pääsuunnittelijan rooli yleisesti Suomen rakennuskentällä ja -hankkeissa on sekä, miten pääsuunnittelija osallistuu suunnittelunohjausprosessiin. Työssä pyritään selvittämään, mitä kestävyydellä rakentamisessa yleensä tarkoitetaan ja mitä se pitää sisällään. Näiden aihepiirien leikkauspintoja ja suhdetta pääsuunnittelijan rooliin pyritään tunnistamaan. Asiantuntijahaastatteluissa kirjallisuuskatsauksessa tunnistettuja painopisteitä pääsuunnittelijan vaikuttavuudelle, ja kestävyyden kannalta oleellisia kohtia pyritään avaamaan ja selvittämään tarkemmin. Ymmärrystä pääsuunnittelijan ja hankkeen kestävyyden keskinäisestä suhteesta syvennetään. Lisäksi tunnistetaan roolin vaikuttavuuteen vaikuttavia tekijöitä ja vaikuttavuutta lisääviä toimenpiteitä. Fokusryhmätyöskentelyissä tutkimuksen perusteella tehtyjä havaintoja työstetään ja niiden yleistettävyyttä testataan. Työskentelyn avulla muodostetaan kokonaiskuva teemasta ja pyri-tään tunnistamaan merkittävimmät seikat ja painopisteet hankkeen kestävyyden ja pääsuunnittelun näkökulmasta. Diplomityön pohjalta voidaan todeta, että pääsuunnittelija voi roolissaan edistää rakennushankkeen kestävyyttä tai kestävyystavoitteiden toteutumista. Roolissa myös tunnistettiin kehittämispotentiaalia. Vaikutusmahdollisuudet kuitenkin vaihtelevat hyvin paljon hankekohtaisesti. Vaikutus kestävyyteen rinnastuu selkeästi pääsuunnittelijalle hankkeessa annettaviin vastuisiin ja rooliin. Erityisen tärkeässä asemassa on rakennushankkeeseen ryhtyvän tahtotila ja suhde pääsuunnittelijaan. Kestävyyden kannalta vaikuttaminen tulisi myös osata kohdentaa oikein, mikä vaatii pääsuunnittelijalta ja suunnitteluryhmältä riittävää kestävyysosaamista.

This thesis explores the role of the chief designer in sustainability in new Finnish building projects. The subject is studied through a literature review, interviews and focus groups. The aim of the study is to find out how the chief designer in their role can impact the sustainability of the project and how effective the influence of these actions can be. Focus is also put on the possible ways in which the influence of the chief designer on sustainability can be increased. Currently the building sector is responsible for a great portion of carbon emissions accelerating global warming, thus also underlining the sector’s role in the fight against climate change. Sustainable building is equally good for the climate and the environment as it is for the overall quality of our built environment. Whilst developing our ways of building more sustainably, the architect contributes to the change. The position of the chief designer is usually appointed to the architect. This role is one possible dimension of the profession. One underlying objective of this thesis is to find out how this dimension of the architect’s role can be exploited to support the development of sustainability in the built environment. In the literature review the chief designer’s role in the Finnish building sector is analyzed through existing studies and relevant literature. The review also focuses on the chief designer’s involvement in design management of the building project. Concept of sustainability is studied closer and a deeper insight on its meaning in the building context is created. Relations between these topics are identified. In expert interviews the focal points found in the literature review are explored further. Relations between the chief designer’s influence and sustainability are discussed in more detail and deeper insight on the correlations between the two are highlighted. Conditions and factors defining the role and the possible impact of the chief designer are identified as well as possible actions to improve and develop the role. In focus groups the observations brought up in the interviews are tested, refined and generalised. In group tasks the overall picture of the subject of the study is formed. The most important findings and focal points are identified. As a conclusion it can be stated that the chief designer in their role can have an influence and improve the sustainability of the building project. Potential for further development in the role was identified. The chief designer’s potentil for improving the sustainability varies rather much based on the project-specific conditions. The impact the role can have correlates clearly to the specific tasks and responsibilities that chief designer in each project is given. Particularly important is the motivation and willingness of the developer to promote sustainability in the project. The relationship between developer and chief designer was also found to be crucial for the effective operation of the chief designer. The ability to influence the design process is not enough to ensure the chief designer’s influence on sustainability. Sustainable design process requires sufficient knowledge and experience on matters of sustainability from the chief designer and the whole design team, as well as clear direction on the relevant focal points in design.
