Tiivistelmä
In this qualitative research, the researcher has explored the purpose of life and the purpose of teaching among Chinese language teachers. Ten Chinese language teachers have been interviewed and all the data has been analyzed using ATLAS.ti for content analysis.
From these teachers’ interviews, the findings indicate that the purpose of teaching is very closely related to the purpose of life. Teachers tend to educate their students in what they believe is right. One of their purposes is to teach students to become a qualified citizen. When teachers believe that helping others can make their life more meaningful, they also teach their students to be a helpful person in society. Teachers who believe life does not have any purpose also believe teaching does not have any purpose. The teachers interviewed in this study are trained both in China and Finland, so most of their teaching purposes are influenced by Chinese and Finnish education ministries. Teaching Chinese culture and Chinese national values are unavoidable, and Finnish National Core Curriculum general requirement goals all are included in the teachers’ teaching plan.
More research is needed to understand Chinese language teachers’ life purpose and teaching purpose. It would be helpful to understand the position of Chinese language teachers in Finland so more suitable student teacher programs can be applied in the future.
