Tiivistelmä
Taulukko-ohjelmien avulla toteutettava tuotannonsuunnittelu on yhä varsin yleistä, vaikka tehokkaampiakin työkaluja tehtävien hoitamiseen on kehitetty.
Conducting production planning with spreadsheet programs is still rather common, even though more efficient tools have been developed for the purpose. The use of spreadsheets requires a lot of manual data entry and updates as well as the planner’s own estimates about the most optimal solutions. With the help of production planning APS systems, it is possible to automate and streamline planning activities compared to planning performed with the help of spreadsheets. APS systems also make it easier to find the most effective solutions for each situation. In addition, other production information systems that support the manufacturing company's processes can increase decision-making support and develop operational efficiency. Such systems include for example ERP and MES.
This thesis examines how the production planning process can be developed using information systems. The study was conducted as a case study for a SME sized manufacturing company and the aim was to identify what would be the most appropriate system solution for the target company. In the target company, production planning has previously been conducted with the use of MS Excel and the company’s ERP system. The thesis consists of a literature review and an empirical section on the target company. With the help of the literature review, a view was gathered on how manufacturing information systems are utilized in production planning in an optimal way. The research method of the empirical part was semi-structured thematic interviews and system demos. Based on the interviews, it was analyzed how the production planning process can be developed with the support of different operating methods and the ERP system, and how the process could be developed with the introduction of a new APS system. Based on the system demos, the suitability of the systems for the operations of the target company was compared.
As a result of the study, the target company is recommended to implement a certain new APS system. The system can be used to solve the current challenges in the process and reduce the need to use MS Excel files. Moreover, the work has resulted the introduction of projects aimed at automating ERP system’s forecasts and material needs. Information related to the production planning in the ERP system has also been extensively updated. Other development proposals for the target company's production planning and control process included the introduction of the S&OP process and a more regular review cycle for the items. With the help of production planning development measures, the target company is more ready to tackle its’ positive challenge - growing demand.
