Tiivistelmä
Today, the planet is confronted with numerous number of global issues. Population growth, rapid urbanization, covid-19 pandemic and climate crisis are current major global challenges.
In such a world situation, this thesis focuses on food, which is intimately related to human’s life and is largely affected by those global issues, and reconsiders the relation between architecture and agricultural production.
The project investigates a new form to integrate food production platforms to sustainable urban multi story housing in the district of Viikki in Helsinki. This does not offer dwellers only self-sufficient platforms where they produce their food. The aim is also to achieve low environmental impact design of recycling water and waste for food growing purpose and maximizing the use of local natural construction materials for creating sustainable and healthy living environment.
Besides designing sustainable lifestyle, this project aims to establish the local community through food producing activities and sharing crops, experience and knowledge. This develops people’s sustainable mind and promotes sustainable brand of the district.
At last, this thesis hopes to act as an inspirational concept design for further sustainable
architectural development.
