Eletyn jäljillä : Autoetnografinen katsaus taiteelliseen kokemukseen sisäisen tarinan lähtökohtana

Abstract

Tässä autoetnografisessa tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan tutkijan omaa taiteellista kokemusta sisäisen tarinan näkökulmasta. Tutkimuksessa pyritään ymmärtämään millä tavalla taiteellinen kokemus vaikuttaa sisäisen tarinan muodostumiseen. Lisäksi tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan sitä, millaisen toisin katsomisen tavan soveltava taide taidemuotona sosiaalityölle mahdollisesti tarjoaa. Tutkimuksen lähtökohtana on toiminut tutkijan oma merkityksellinen suhde taiteeseen sekä tavoite oman ammatillisen identiteetin syventämiseen. Taiteeseen ja sen mahdollisuuksiin tutustuminen voi lisätä sosiaalityön omaa ymmärrystä jatkuvasti muuttuvassa maailmassa.

Tutkimus sijoittuu soveltavan taiteen ja sosiaalityön kohtaamispinnalle. Autoetnografiselle tutkimukselle tyypillisesti tutkimuksen aineisto perustuu tutkijan omiin havaintoihin ja muistoihin tutkimukseen liittyvästä taiteellisesta kokemuksesta. Tutkimuksen keskiössä oleva taiteellinen kokemus on eletty syyskuussa 2019 tamperelaisen Legioonateatteri ry:n Luontojemme neljä vuodenaikaa -hankkeen syysleirillä, johon tutkija osallistui yhtenä osallistujista. Tässä tutkimuksessa leikitellään kylläkin tieteellisissä rajoissa sillä ajatuksella, että sosiaalityö ottaa taiteen hetkellisesti omakseen. Tässä tutkimuksessa se tarkoittaa sitä, että soveltavaa taidetta tarkastellaan sosiaalityön tutkimuksellisesta näkökulmasta. Tarinallisuus tarjoaa tutkimukselle teoreettisen lähtökohdan ja tavan ymmärtää sosiaalista todellisuutta.

Tutkijan omaan taiteelliseen kokemukseen perustuen aineistosta koostettiin viisi eri osa-aluetta, joiden nähtiin vaikuttaneen omaan kokemukseen, sen olosuhteisiin ja kokemuksen kautta muodostuvaan tarinaan. Nämä osa-alueet olivat 1) jaettu taiteellinen kokemus, 2) ohjattu kokemus, 3) ajan ja leikin varjolla tutkiminen, 4) ohjatun toiminnan ulkopuolella ja 5) kokonaisvaltainen tulkintaprosessi. Taiteellisessa kokemuksessa aktivoitunut mahdollisuus itsen ulkopuoliselle tarkastelulle ja omien yhteyksien vahvistamiselle tukee henkilökohtaista kehittymisprosessia, joka vastaavasti tukee vastuullista ja tietoista päätöksentekoa. Taiteen ja ohjauksen suojassa tapahtuva toiminta oli sallivaa ja kokeilevaa. Taiteellisen kokemuksen koettiin kannustavan ja johdattavan itsen kokonaisvaltaiseen tutkimiseen. Taiteelliseen työskentelyyn liittyvä leikillisyys ja vapaus nähtiin vaativan aikaa ja tilaa, sekä luottamusta ja uskoa taiteeseen. Taiteeseen liittyvä ennakoimattomuus, passiivisuus ja taiteellisen kokemuksen lumoava vaikutus tarjoavat sosiaalityölle vaihtoehtoisen tavan katsoa ja tulkita ympärillä olevaa.

Tutkimuksen henkilökohtaisen luonteen vuoksi tutkimuksen ei voida nähdä tarjoavan yksiselitteisiä vastauksia tai yleistettäviä tuloksia. Sen sijaan tutkimus tarjoaa näkökulman soveltavan taiteen ja sosiaalityön tarkasteluun ja siihen millaisia prosesseja taiteellinen kokemus olosuhteineen voi saada aikaan. Tarinat ja taide ovat osa ihmisyyttä, ja niiden kautta on mahdollista ymmärtää itseä ja toisia paremmin.

This autoethnographic study examines the researcher’s own artistic experience from the perspective of one’s inner story. The study seeks to understand how an artistic experience influences the construction of the inner story. In addition, the study examines the possible new ways of seeing what applied arts has to offer for social work. This research is based on the researcher's own meaningful relationship with art and the aim of deepening one's own professional identity. Getting to know art and its possibilities can also increase understanding of social work in an ever-changing world.

This research takes place where applied arts and social work meet. As an autoethnographic research study, the material of this study is based on the researcher's own observations and memories based on the artistic experience related to the research. The artistic experience at the heart of this research took place in September 2019 on a camp organized by the Legion Theater in the city of Tampere. The camp, in which the researcher participated as one of the participants, was part of a yearlong project called the Four Seasons of Our Nature (Luontojemme neljä vuodenaikaa). This study toys within scientific boundaries with the idea that social work embraces art for a moment. In the context of this study, this means that applied arts is viewed from social work’s perspective of research. Narratives provide the theoretical frame for this research and a way to understand social construction of reality.

Based on the researcher's own artistic experience, five different themes were compiled from the research material, which were seen to have influenced the researcher’s own experience, its circumstances and the story formed through the experience. These themes were 1) shared artistic experience, 2) instructed experience, 3) exploration under the guise of time and play, 4) outside instructed action, and 5) holistic process of interpretation. The artistic experience activated an opportunity for self-examination. The strengthening of one's own connections with oneself, others and the surrounding environment supports the process of personal development, which in turn supports responsible and informed decision-making. Activities under the protection of art and instruction were seen to be permissive, experimental and they encouraged exploration of oneself holistically. The playfulness and freedom associated with artistic action requires time and space, as well as trusting and believing in art. The unpredictability, passive nature and enchanting impact of the artistic experience was seen to provide alternative ways of seeing and interpreting within the field of social work.

Due to the personal nature of this study, it cannot offer unambiguous answers or generalizable results. Instead, it provides a perspective on how to examine applied arts and social work and the processes an artistic experience and its circumstances can spark. Stories and art are part of being human and they offer us ways to better understand ourselves and each other.
