Työn tarkoituksena on vertailla erinäisillä optimointitekniikoilla kehitettyjä rakenteita sekä pohtia, miten paljon aikaa eri tekniikat vaativat verrattuna siihen, miten hyviä tuloksia niillä saadaan.
Optimoinnin suoritustavasta riippumatta optimointi vaatii aikaa. Kun design studylla on saatu selville optimaalisimmat profiilit, on suhteellisen helppo nähdä, miten parametrien muuttaminen vaikuttaa palkin optimaalisuuteen, mikä helpottaa topologiaoptimointia. Kun rakennetta kevennettiin topologiaoptimoinnin avulla, havaittiin, että topologiaoptimoinnilla voidaan tuottaa nopeasti rakenne, joka on lähellä optimaalisinta versiota rakenteesta, mutta mikäli halutaan luoda optimaalisin mahdollinen versio, kestää siinä huomattavan paljon kauemmin. Työssä havaittiin, että noin puolessa tunnissa kyettiin luomaan noin 24 % keventämätöntä rakennetta kevyempi topologiaoptimoitu rakenne. Kun samasta rakenteesta haluttiin luoda optimaalisin mahdollinen versio, kesti optimoinnissa noin 100 minuuttia, jolloin profiilia saatiin kevennettyä noin 27% alkuperäisestä.
Verrokkikappaleitten luomisessa meni aikaa noin 6 tuntia, mikä on huomattavasti enemmän kuin yhden kappaleen topologiaoptimointiin vaadittu aika, mutta toisaalta verrokkikappaleista tuli myös huomattavasti kevyempiä. Toisaalta Fusion 360:n generatiivista designia olisi voitu käyttää verrokkikappaleen luomisen sijaan jo ennen topologiaoptimointia, jolloin olisi tiedetty jo ennen optimoinnin aloittamista, millaista rakennetta topologia optimoinnilla etsitään. Tällä keinolla olisi voitu vähentää topologia optimointiin käytettävää aikaa. In this work we are trying to come up with lightest possible structure which can carry a mass of 1000 kg that is 2 meters away from its attachment point. Height and width of this structure must be less than 30 cm.
In this work we will be creating structures by manual optimization and by using design study and topology optimization features of Solidworks. We will be comparing these structures to each other to see how much weight can be reduced by optimization. We will also be comparing how much time these different optimization techniques take compared to how much the struc-tures weight can be reduced. We will also generate structure with generative design feature of Fusion 360 to be able to compare how much more weight could have been shaved off from other structures. This comparison structure might not be possible to produce with traditional manufacturing methods.
When comparing structures created by manual optimization and with design study feature of Solidworks we do not see much difference which is expected since these methods are used to find lightest possible profile without removing material. When topology optimization was used to remove the unnecessary material from predetermined profiles, we were able to make new structures which were 25–33 % lighter than original lightest possible structure.
When comparing structures where material has not been removed to the comparison struc-tures generated with Fusion 360 it was noticed that the lightest possible structures from which material had not been removed from were 74–100 % heavier than comparison structures. The topology optimized structures were also about 31–36 % heavier than these comparison struc-tures.
Some optimization techniques require more work than others which means that some take more time than others. Design study and manual optimization are the fastest optimization tech-niques used in this work. Both techniques are a bit faster than topology optimization. With these to methods the lightest structures from which material has not been removed can be found in about two hours. After using the design study feature of Solidworks it is easier to see how changing parameters of the structure affects the weight and load carrying capacity of the structure. Using information gained from design study it is easier to select the profiles which are to be optimized with topology optimization. While trying to find the most optimal structure with topology optimization it was noticed that it is quick to reduce some weight from a structure but finding the most optimal version take a whole lot more time. Using topology optimization feature of Solidworks we were able to make a structure that was approximately 24 % lighter than lightest structure from which material was not removed from in just half an hour. Creating the most optimal possible structure with topology optimization took about 100 minutes. The most optimal structure was approximately 27 % lighter than the lightest structure created with design study.
Generating the comparison structures took around six hours which is noticeably longer than running a single topology study. However, these comparison structures were also noticeably lighter than the topology optimized structures. The generative study could have also been used before topology study to find out more information about the most optimal structure to speed up the topology optimization process.
