Tämän kirjallisuustutkimuksen pohjalta Pilodyn-laitteella suoritettiin kokeita erilaisille puukoekappaleille eri kosteusolosuhteissa. Koekappaleille tehtiin myös tiheys- ja puristuslujuuskokeita. Koetulosten perusteella tehtiin johtopäätökset Pilodyn-laitteen tunkeumasyvyyden ja puun eri ominaisuuksien välisistä riippuvuussuhteista. Otokseltaan samankaltaisten koe-erien suorittaminen eri kosteuspitoisuuksissa mahdollisti Pilodynlaitteen tuloksien kosteuspitoisuuden korjauskaavan muodostamisen. Kosteuspitoisuuden korjauskaavalla eri kosteuspitoisuuksissa suoritettavat Pilodyn-laitteen mittaustulokset saadaan keskenään vertailukelpoisiksi.
Koetulosten perusteella Pilodyn-laitteen tunkeumasyvyydellä on vahva yhteys virheettömän puun lujuusominaisuuksien kanssa, varsinkin tiheyden kanssa. Tästä syystä Pilodyn-laitteen tunkeumasyvyydelle muodostettiin SFS-EN 338 lujuusluokkien mukainen lujuustaulukointi puun ominaistiheyden mukaan. Puun heterogeenisesta luonteesta johtuen pelkästään virheettömästä puusta saatava tieto ei yksistään riitä puurakenteen lujuuden arvioimiseen. Tästä syystä puun erilaiset viat tulee myös huomioida. Lisäksi Pilodyn-laitteella arvioitu virheettömän puun lujuus on hyvin pistemäinen lokaali lujuus. Näin ollen arvioitaessa puurakenteen lujuutta kokonaisuudessaan tulee tarkastella myös puun oksaisuutta ja rasituksia. The need for a renovation, and the overall structural condition of the building, can be determined with a condition assessment. Currently, the condition assessments of timber structures are mostly based on visual observation and drilling or knifing the structure. However, these kinds of investigations are not producing explicit or statistical enough information about the condition of timber structure.
One of the main objectives of the present thesis was to study the use of Pilodyn in the condition assessment of timber structures. Pilodyn is a penetrometer which measures a flat nosed pins penetration depth in timber. Other objectives of the study included investigating the correlation between Pilodyn penetration depth and timber strength properties as well as the effects of moisture content on Pilodyn penetration depth. The use of Pilodyn was investigated by exploring timber properties, the strength grading of timber and former studies conducted of the instrument.
Based on some of the earlier studies conducted of Pilodyn, tests were carried out with the objective of comparing Pilodyn to different kinds of timber specimens in varying moisture conditions. Density and compression strength parallel to the grain were also tested on the timber specimens. The test results indicated a direct correlation between Pilodyn penetration depth and the mechanical properties of timber. The tests were performed on several homogenous samples in different moisture conditions to produce a formula for adjusting the Pilodyn penetration depth according to moisture condition. With the adjustment formula, the Pilodyn results performed in different moisture conditions are comparable.
Finally, the test results demonstrate a strong correlation between Pilodyn penetrationdepth and the strength properties of defect-free timber, especially density. Because of this, a strength grading table was made for Pilodyn penetration depth according to SFSEN 338 strength classes based on the characteristic density of timber. Due to the heterogenic nature of timber, knowledge gained from analyzing defect-free timber is not accurate enough to estimate the strength of timber structure as a whole. Hence, the various potential defects of timber must also be considered. In addition to this, the strength of defect-free timber estimated with Pilodyn is a value specific to that very location. Thus, when estimating the overall strength of a timber structure with Pilodyn, the knots and stresses of timber must also be taken into account.
