There is more than half a million summer cabins in Finland. The average age of owners is relatively high, so the question of generational handover is topical. It is highly important for the economy of small municipalities that summer houses remain in use. Inheriting cabins can be problematic because of multiple siblings, conflicts arising from inheritance, and different preferences of younger generation considering their leisure time. The goal of this master's thesis is to find solutions to issues of generational handover of summer housing. Changing needs of future summer housing and potential for densification of waterfronts are investigated as background research for the design task. The main focus of the thesis is on developing design options for cabin Haavikko. The objective is to make it suitable for simultanious use of three siblings by means of renovation and complementary construction. The design area is challenging because of height differences and limited natural light on site. Despite of that the basic principles of suggested development options can be applied to different sites with similar goals.
