Tutkimuksessa nettirikollisuutta tutkitaan 15–25-vuotiaiden suomalaisnuorten (N = 1200) rikosuhrikokemusten kautta logistisen regressioanalyysin avulla. Nuorista 95 ilmoitti joutuneensa nettirikoksen kohteeksi. Vaikka suhteellisen pieni osa nuorista joutuu nettirikoksen uhriksi, tilanteen ei voida olettaa kääntyvän parempaan suuntaan. Näkemys perustuu tilastolliseen tietoon, jonka mukaan perinteinen rikollisuus on yhä enenevässä määrin siirtymässä internetiin. Nuoren rikosuhrikokemus voi johtaa monenlaisiin ongelmiin myöhemmin. Siksi on yhteiskunnallisesti tärkeä selvittää, mistä nuorten nettirikokset johtuvat.
ABSTRACT
Development of Internet, digitalization and available technology have contributed to the increasing use of the Internet it’s services to facilitate people’s daily lives. The Internet is a modern day’s digital market square where people can handle their everyday business and meet others around the clock. Social media services are meeting places where users can connect with old friends and create new social contacts. The widespread routine-like use of the Internet has brought with its various negative side effects, such as cyberbullying, cyber harassment, and cybercrime.
Research responds to the question in the framework of Routine Activity theory, whether the factors target’s exposure to offender, target suitability, and absence of guardianships are in context of cybercrime victimization. Routine Activity Theory (RAT) functions is based on the view that crime flourishes in routine behaviour of society and individuals. According to RAT, the likelihood of criminal act to occur is high when three essential elements of crime converge in space and time: a motivated offender, an attractive target, and the absence of capable guardianship. Although RAT was created in the era, when the Internet was not available to everyone, the theory has been later verified as a reliable theory to explain cybercrime victimization.
In this research, cybercrime victimization is approached through victimization experiences of Finnish adolescents and young adults aged 15–25 (N = 1200), using RAT as framework. 95 adolescents and young adults reported being subject cybercrime. Even though relatively small proportion of adolescents and young adults are subjected to online crime, it can be assumed the number of cybercrime victims will increase. The view is based on statistical information that traditional crime is increasingly moving to the Internet. The victimization of an adolescents and young adults can later lead to a variety of problems in his or her life. It is therefore socially important to understand which facts contribute to cybercrime victimization.
Based on the results of this research it can be considered RAT factor target suitability relates to adolescents and young adult’s cybercrime victimization. Men, regular changing of the password used with social media services, and compulsive Internet use are in context of the cybercrime victimization. The results of this research are mainly in line with used literature and previous studies. In overall, the results are topical and could be utilized in society as well as be used to inform and educate adolescents and young adults. Results can also be used to identify who of adolescents and young adults are most at risk of becoming victims of cybercrime.
