Tiivistelmä
Training activities play an extremely important role in updating knowledge, skills and transferring techniques to meet requirements of continuous development of medical science and technology in the health sector. Training of Trainers (TOT) is becoming an increasingly popular method in the field of medical education to produce qualified staff. Highly trained staff is particularly important in the health sector to ensure the highest level of care for patients. Since 2010, a Japanese prototype of TOT workshop was introduced and organized at central and provincial hospitals of Vietnam. This program focused on six contents; Kawakita Jiro method (KJ), learning objective, learning strategy, learning evaluation, learning assessment tool, and teaching methods. This thesis explores and evaluates the knowledge, skills, frequency of application, confidence, and behavioral change in teaching activities of ex-trainees after a TOT medical workshop. The thesis employs qualitative and quantitative surveys conducted from March to July, 2017. Data was collected using in-depth interviews, and group discussion with leaders, colleagues and learners of ex-trainees. Findings indicate that the TOT workshops enabled ex-trainees to apply knowledge and skills acquired during the workshop in the work environment. The ex-trainees also showed capacity in implementing, training evaluation, giving lectures, presentations and confidence with improvement in the daily work. Moreover, findings found that the contents of the workshops are appropriate and support continuous medical education program for provincial hospitals.
Nevertheless, there were some limitations for ex-trainees working at the provincial level such as the frequency of training skills application, lack of funding, and limited experience using the new TOT prototype. As a result, the research provides some evidences for the Ministry of Health and three core central hospitals to consider and revise the workshop’s contents. It is suggested that the above six contents be adjusted to be more practical for learners in provincial hospitals, thus making the learning more suitable in the context of Vietnamese hospitals. This would assist sustainment of TOT workshops in the future.
