Tiivistelmä
This research examines the viability of Virtual Reality (VR) as a mode in which theatre performance can be realized in the post-pandemic era. In the wake of the fading popularity of traditional theatres and the emergence of immersive digital world platforms, VR theatre emerges as an attractive idea, unifying the cutting edge of technology with the creative vision. The research explores how VR, with the support of metaverse environments and social VR platforms, can maintain the emotional depth and communal nature of live performances, but at the same time increase interactivity and accessibility. Relying on recent developments in VR technology, as well as its use in the arts, this study investigates the role of immersive media in theatrical experiences. A mixed method was employed, which involved a controlled experiment with ten participants who interacted with a VR theatre experience. Quantitative data was obtained through the use of structured questionnaires, while the open-ended feedback was analyzed thematically. Important variables that were analyzed included user engagement, immersion, usability, as well as overall satisfaction. Results show a largely favorable attitude, profound interest in future VR theatre experiences. Nevertheless, issues related to physical discomfort, emotional relations, and technical restrictions continue. The findings show how UX design (sound, visuals, and interactive features) is central in maximizing immersion and user satisfaction. What this study adds to virtual theatre innovation discourse, and practical suggestions on how to enhance user experience, is that VR theatre can be useful as both a supplementing and revolutionary medium within the modern art of performance.
