Tiivistelmä
This article examines the theoretical discourse surrounding the concept of the literary movement, focusing primarily on discussions from the 2000s while also addressing earlier debates. The impetus for this analysis stems from the observation that the term “movement” remains undefined in both Finnish and international literary studies reference works, despite its prevalent use as a fundamental concept in research. Critically evaluating perspectives from the 2000s on the term’s conceptual content, the article identifies key theoretical and methodological questions pertinent to the study of movements. The overarching aim is to stimulate theoretical discussion on the general foundational issues inherent in movement research. The article explores the relationship between literary movements and the societal and ideological movements reflected in literature. It also investigates differing views on whether a movement can permeate an entire period and the implications of such perspectives. A central challenge identified in the article is to deal with the relationship between textual and contextual analysis in research practice. The article posits that movements identified in literary history are not mutually commensurate; they can vary significantly concerning social construction and textual manifestations. This variability complicates the development of coherent theories and methodologies. As a potential solution, the article suggests approaching movements through the lens of historical poetics, which emphasizes textual analysis while also incorporating contextual considerations.
