Tiivistelmä
Tutkielmani aiheena on yhteiskuntaan integroituminen vankeusrangaistuksen suorittaneiden miesten näkökulmasta. Tarkastelen yhteiskuntaan integroitumisen prosessia viiden vankeusrangaistuksen suorittaneen miehen kertomuksen avulla. Tavoitteeni on kuvata minkälaisena onnistunut yhteiskuntaan integroituminen näyttäytyy kertomuksissa. Aineistoni on kerätty narratiivisen eli tarinallisen tutkimusmenetelmän ja -haastattelun avulla. Esittelen aineistoa juonianalyysin menetelmällä käymällä läpi kertomusten elämänvaiheita lapsuudesta nykyisyyteen.
Teoreettisena viitekehyksenäni on Laubin ja Sampsonin kontrolliteoria (2003). Teoriassa esitetään rakenteellisia käännekohtia, jotka auttavat irrottautumaan rikolliselta uralta. Niiden ohella korostetaan sosiaalisen kontrollin merkitystä ja yksilön muutosvalmiutta. Aineiston analyysissa peilaan siitä tekemiäni havaintoja kontrolliteoriaan. Mielenkiintoni suuntautuu siihen, painottavatko miehet kertomuksissaan sisäisiä vai ulkoisia tekijöitä yhteiskuntaan integroitumisen mahdollistajana.
Tutkielmassani muodostan miesten kertomuksista tarinan.
Yhteiskunnassa vankeihin kohdistuva stigmatisaatio on voimakas. Aineistoni perusteella vankien päihdeongelmaan on syytä kiinnittää erityisesti huomiota. Yhteiskuntaan integroituminen on aikaa vievä ja moniulotteinen prosessi, jonka aikana on annettava tilaa yksilön omalle kertomukselle ja muutosvalmiuden rakentamiselle. Yhteiskuntaan integroituminen vaatii työtä ja rohkeutta.
"The table is now cleared and it is time to build a new house of cards" : the ex- prisoners' story of integration to the society
This thesis deals with integration to the society from the perspective of men who have carried out a prison sentence. I view the process of integration through narrative stories of five ex-prisoners. My goal is to characterize how the successful social integration appears in the stories. The research data collection is made by narrative research method and interviews. I present the data with plot analysis method by describing life stages of ex-prisoners from their childhood to the present.
The frame theory of the study is Laub`s and Sampson's control theory (2003). In the control theory they present structural turning points that help to break away from criminal career. In addition they emphasize the importance of social control and individual's readiness of change. In the analysis I compare the observations I made from the data with the Laub`s and Sampson's control theory. I am interested in whether ex-prisoners emphasize internal or external factors as social integration enabler.
I form a narrative story from the interview reports. The story is characterized by description of life in which alcohol and drugs take part from the early childhood on, as well as taking control of life into ones own hands in the youth. In the adult age there appears balancing between society's conventional models of life, such as family life and work but also challenging them and detachment from them. There are features that can be found from the ex-prisoners` story that could be described to belong in living in the margins of society. Such are commiting offenses, difficulties in using money and jail convictions. In the present, there can be seen the aim towards integration into society, which comes out of their own will. One's own readiness for change is essential. The story stands out structural turning points, such as grandchild's birth and coming to faith that support the readiness for the change. Structural turningpoints include also various public and third sector actors which offer support acts. The change can be observed in the identity, values and mind.
Prisoners' stigmatization in society is strong. In the present the narrators feel that they are accepted by others without the prisoner's stigma. Social workers, police officers and guards touch the surface of the story in its various stages. Present society is no longer an enemy." Based on this study especially the prisoners' alcohol and drug abuse problems need to be paid particular attention to. Social integration is a time-consuming and intricate process during which there must be room made for individual's own story and building readiness to change. Integrating to society demands work and courage.
