Tiivistelmä
Pro gradu -tutkielmassa tarkastellaan useita sijaishuoltopaikan muutoksia kokeneiden nuorten sijaishuoltopaikoille ja kodille antamia merkityksiä elämänkulun viitekehyksessä. Tutkimuksessa selvitetään, miten koti yhtenä olemisen paikkana määrittyy nuorten puheessa ja millaisia merkityksiä kodille annetaan. Toinen laajempi kysymys koskee sijaishuoltopaikoista kerrottuja kokemuksia, sekä niihin asettumisen mahdollisuuksia. Kysymys sijoitetun lapsen oikeudesta pysyvään sijaishuoltopaikkaan vaatii tarkastelua. On tärkeä miettiä niitä pysyvyyttä ja turvallisuutta tuottavia tekijöitä sijaishuoltopaikassa, joiden kautta lapsella olisi mahdollisuus pitää paikkaa myös kotina. Tukemalla pysyvyyttä ja jatkuvuutta sijoitetun lapsen elämässä, tuetaan samalla lapsen mahdollisuutta eheään elämäntarinaan.
Tutkimusaineisto koostuu seitsemästä 18-20-vuotiaan nuoren haastatteluista, joiden elämänkulkua on värittänyt monipaikkaisuus useiden sijaishuoltopaikkojen vaihdoksien vuoksi. Tutkimusaineisto on kerätty keskisuuresta eteläsuomalaisesta kaupungista, jonka jälkihuollon piirissä kyseiset nuoret haastatteluhetkellä olivat. Aineisto on analysoitu sisällönanalyysin keinoin.
Koti on monimerkityksinen käsite, jota tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan sen eri ulottuvuuksia kautta: koti fyysisenä, mentaalisena ja sosiaalisena paikkana. Kodin eri ulottuvuudet tulevat esiin nuorten puheissa ja saavat erilaisia painotuksia elämänvaiheesta riippuen. Nuorille oma koti merkitsee ennen kaikkea paikkaa, jossa on saavutettu vapaus toimia.
Many places, one home : young people`s experiences of changing places in foster care and living in multiple places over their life course
The purpose of this thesis is to find out what kind of meanings young people who have had many
changes in foster care places give to care places and home in the framework of life course. The
intention is to determine how home is defined in young people`s stories and what are the meanings
of home. The other purpose is to find out what kind of experiences the same people have about
foster care places and the chances to settle down there. The question about the child`s right to
permanent foster care place needs to be reviewed. It`s important to think about the factors that
creates stability and safety for a child in the foster care place. Through these components there is a
chance for a child to feel the place as home. By supporting stability and continuity the child has a
chance to an unbroken life story.
The material of this thesis consists interviews of seven young adults, who are now aged between 18
and 20. Their life course has included many changes in foster care places. The material is collected
from medium-sized city in southern Finland. The method which was used to analyze this material
was a content analysis.
Home is a multi-dimensional concept which has been studied through its different dimensions:
home as a physical, mental and social place. These dimensions appear in interviewees stories and
get different emphases depending on different stage of life. A home of their own means at first a
place where the freedom to act is reached. The home today is seen as a comparison to a home that
was in the past and a home that will be in the future. The social dimension of a foster care place is
the most important thing for settling down and feeling like home. Especially the role of the
employees is seen significant. The home-like feeling is made by interacting with other people in the
place. Also learning the rules and the rhythm of the place is seen important for settling down. The
foster care place may have been home-like and it has partly been reached as a physical, social and
emotional place in spite of its turnovers. But it has never been home in the sense that the
interviewed defined home. The time in foster care is significant period in the life course and leaves
its mark on the individual. The key aim for this thesis is to make child care and especially foster
care practices known through the stories of the people who have experienced it.
