Analyysimenetelmänä tutkimuksessa on laadullinen sisällönanalyysi. Haastatteluissa äidit kertoivat, mitä lapsen ruoka-aineallergia voi pahimmillaan aiheuttaa, kuten henkeä uhkaavan allergisen reaktion, ystävyyssuhteiden katkeamisen, äidin masentumisen ja perheen sosiaalisen elämän vähenemisen. Perheet tarvitsevat selviytyäkseen paljon tukea. Haastatteluista ilmeni, että tuen saaminen vaatii vanhemmilta omaa aktiivisuutta. Haastatteluiden perusteella lastenneuvolan terveydenhoitajan tietämys ruoka-aineallergioista on erittäin vähäistä, eivätkä äidit kokeneet saavansa sieltä apua.
Analyysin tuloksena havaittiin, että lapsen ruoka-aineallergian vaikutukset perheessä muodostui kolmesta kategoriasta, jotka olivat; perheen sosiaalinen elämä, äidin jaksaminen ja perheen ruokailu. Perheiden selviytymistä kuvaavat kategoriat olivat; vanhempien tuen saanti ja äidin voimavarojen ylläpitäminen.
Tutkimuksesta saatava tieto auttaa esimerkiksi terveydenhoitajia kiinnittämään aikaisempaa enemmän huomiota neuvolakäynneillä lapsen mahdolliseen ruoka-aineallergiaan ja lisäämään terveydenhoitajien tietoutta ruoka-aineallergioista sekä perheiden eteenpäin ohjauksesta esimerkiksi vertaistukitoimintaan.

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to describe what kind of effects a child's food allergy has on the life of a family and what are the family's means of coping.
The material for the study was gathered by interviewing mothers (N=10) in their homes. The interviews were tape-recorded and typed afterwards. The method of analysis in the study was the qualitative content analysis. The interviews revealed stories on what a child's food allergy may cause at its worst, like a life-threatening allergic reaction, the break of a friendship, the mother's depression and the decrease of the family's social life. Families need a lot of support to cope. The interviews revealed that getting support requires personal activity from the parents. On the basis of the interviews, the knowledge on food allergies of a public health nurse in a child health clinic is minimal and the mothers felt that they did not get help from there.
As the result of the analysis it was found out that the effects of a child's food allergy in a family consisted of three categories, which were social life of the family, mother´s coping and family dining. The categories describing a family's coping were: getting support and maintaining mental resources.
The knowledge of the study will help, for example public health nurses, pay more attention during child health clinic visits than before to a child's possible food allergy and increase the knowledge of public health nurses on food allergies and on further guidance of families, for example to participate in peer support activity.
Key words: family, food allergy, coping
